Augmentive and Alternative Communication

AAC

An AAC device stands for an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device, which is any tool, technology, or system used by people with speech or language impairments to express thoughts, needs, and ideas. AAC devices range from low-tech options like picture boards to high-tech speech-generating devices (SGDs), and they can augment existing speech, provide an alternative to it, or both. These devices empower individuals to communicate, build language skills, and engage with others when they cannot use spoken language effectively.

Types of AAC Devices

  • Unaided Systems:

These rely solely on the individual's own body, such as gestures, body language, and sign language.

  • Aided Systems:

These involve external tools and equipment.

    • Low-tech Options: These include communication boards, books with pictures or symbols, and electronic buttons that play pre-recorded messages.

    • High-tech Options: These are electronic devices like tablets or dedicated speech-generating devices (SGDs) that can generate spoken words and sentences.

How AAC Devices Work

  • Visual Input: Users select symbols, pictures, or typed text to form messages.

  • Speech Output: The device then speaks the selected words or sentences aloud, acting as the individual's voice.

  • Hands-Free Input: For individuals with limited physical ability, these devices can be controlled using methods like mouse sticks, switches, head sticks, or head-tracking controls.

Who Uses AAC Devices

AAC devices are for anyone who cannot use spoken language to effectively communicate their needs and ideas. This includes people with conditions that affect their speech or language, such as: Autism, Developmental disabilities, and Speech impairments.

Benefits of Using an AAC Device

  • Improved Expression: Helps users convey their thoughts, needs, and wants.

  • Enhanced Independence: Allows individuals to participate more fully in conversations and daily life.

  • Skill Development: Supports the growth of language and communication abilities.
